In August of 2013, we received an inspired vision to revitalize the residents and the neighborhood surrounding Fargo-Oakfield Playground located in Detroit, Michigan. In 2014 as a first initiative two local ministries' House of Comfort Ministry and Holy City of God Fellowship Ministries formed a non-profit organization named Field of Dreams Community Development Inc. (FODCD).
"Building people is the real focus of our work"
We started by organizing a cost free, two day, community festival on August 15, 2014 for the neighborhood surrounding the Fargo-Oakfield Playground with the purpose of bringing the community together on common ground. The special event, "Festival of Hope" blessed the community and it's children. Please visit our video gallery.
We are engaging communities with the desire to motivate to renovate by extending our helping hand and promoting an elevated mindset of hope. Our aim is to help adults and children fufill their dreams and potential. Our assignment is to first build people and ultimately the neighborhood. Our interest is partnering with residents, local businesses, churches, schools and governmental agencies building relationships that help restore, revitalize, and rejuvenate the people of the neighborhoods in our sphere of influence.
Community Festival of Hope ~ is a cost free event for under resourced residents aimed at bringing people together to offer resources which will enhance the lifestyle of the residents. Our vision is “People helping People to Build Our Detroit”. “The festival is designed to bring together community residents, churches, businesses, governmental agencies, health care providers’ etc. as a bridge of opportunity to impact lives by helping those in need.
The Festival offers free activities, services and food and includes inflatable bounce houses, face painting, playground games, raffles and giveaways, music, health information, educational resources for youth, prayer stations, free clothing, and more.
"Reach to Teach" Summer Youth Development Initiative ~ We have partnered with The Molina Foundation’s "Families Learning Together" initiative to provide resources and tips to help children combat learning loss over the summer months. Molina has provided books/workbooks that we have distributed to the families of children throughout our communities. We are thrilled to work with Molina Foundation a nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing disparities in access to education and health from under-served low income children, families, and communities.
Operation "Streetscape" ~ working directly with the City of Detroit and other local community-based organizations to help residents and other community stakeholders prioritize issues and develop and implement plans for neighborhood improvements, i.e. boarding abandoned houses, clearing overgrown lots, cleanup of dumpsites...etc.
We provide community jobs for local youth groups to maintain beautification efforts of neighborhood terrains.
The Project Next Step: “Streetscape” program strives to make our neighborhoods cleaner and safer by bringing residents together to form strategic action plans and linking them with a variety of resources from the community and the corporate and nonprofit sectors.
